I sculpt in steel, using techniques of my own invention. My primary tool is the oxy-acetylene torch, which I use to shape, cut, join, and texture the steel, which comes in rods, tubes, and sheets.
I started working the day I awoke from a dream in which I was already a sculptor, displaying a collection of skeletal works. A few months later, I attempted art school, but quickly realized that I neither needed nor wanted instruction or input from others. What I was doing, I had to do alone.
There is a satisfaction in turning figments of my imagination into steel objects, but I sculpt primarily for the process itself. I attempt to incorporate a new challenge of some sort into each new piece, in terms of technique, composition, or both, which provides me with a sense of exploration. I also find that the concentration required by welding has meditative properties that serve as welcome therapy for my hyperactive, analytical brain.
I now teach classes at Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle. These classes are focused on my oxy-acetylene welding techniques, and anything to do with mastering the use of the torch as a tool to work steel. I hope to eventually see others take what I have developed and go on to use it in ways I can't currently imagine.
